Most therapy clients are unaware of the loopholes some “providers” use to render mental health services to people without proper training or licensure. The words “counseling” are protected under licensure laws and require appropriate training, registration, and licensure to practice legally. However, the word “psychotherapist” is not a protected word, which is misleading to the public, and allows anyone regardless of education or licensure status to provide counseling and therapy to anyone. This is unethical but also difficult to enforce. Being an informed consumer is an important place to begin. Always check your provider’s education and licensure status before beginning services to ensure you are in competent hands. Click on the links below to learn more about my educational background.
